Imagine no slipping on icy sidewalks in the winter. Yaun Company is currently involved in providing the design and materials for commercial radiant snow melt systems at an upstate N.Y. health facility. When finished more than 25,000 square feet of sidewalk area will be kept snow and ice free at all times. The customer became aware of the problems of keeping their sidewalks snow free by traditional removal methods over the past several winters: problems such as damage to sidewalks and buildings, cost of salt and sand and timing needed to keep up with weather using man and machine power. It should be mentioned that the patients must be moved in wheelchairs between buildings at this facility. The heat sources for these systems are oil and LP gas fired boilers totaling in excess of 4 million BTUH output. Insul-Trap insulation has been

installed beneath the sidewalks and 1-1/2" insulated and plastic coated pex tubing is being used in trenches for runs to/from underground radiant manifold. HeatLink 5/8" and 3/4" pex filled with water/antifreeze is delivering heat to the sidewalk slabs. Automatic control is being provided by Tekmar.
This kind of system may be expensive to install but costs very little to operate. It only runs when sensors in the sidewalk tell the boilers to fire and the circulators to pump. Typical operating time for properly controlled snowmelt systems in eastern upstate N.Y. is about 50 hours per winter.
If you have a project where slippery walkways or vehicle approaches are an issue and the liability exposure that goes with them, call Yaun Company for the solution.
