Steamed with Replacement Boilers

Everyone who is involved with installing heating equipment is having an extremely busy heating season.  Sooner or later, you will be asked to replace a steam boiler.  I say replace because I can't remember the last time a steam system was designed and installed in a new building.  There are not many contractors who are comfortable enough with steam systems to even suggest such a system to a new homeowner.
The reason for bringing the topic up is because we still sell a fair amount of steam boilers to the trade as replacement equipment.  However, I should like to caution anyone who thinks that they will simply pullout an older boiler and insert a new more efficient steam boiler in its place without evaluating the piping arrangement along with vents and traps is asking for headaches.
Please keep in mind that new superior steaming boilers generally have a smaller water content than the old boiler being replaced.  Consequently, they make steam very fast and the water is sometimes gone before the condensate can  return.  A stressing
cycle of flooding or burner cutout from the low water cutoff begins.  Carefully inspect the return piping and determine whether a Hoffman condensate receiver will be needed.  Please be aware that continually introducing fresh makeup water will only shorten the life of the boiler, but with proper piping, vents and traps the new boiler will last for many years as designed.

The electrical usage is equal to a 40-watt light bulb. Each unit has a header coil with aluminum fins positioned to deliver maximum BTU's in the smallest possible space. Don't worry about losing the installation instructions and parts sheet. The info is on a big label affixed to the top of unit.  The serial number and date codes are on the unit label also.
