HELP IN SELECTING
RANGE HOODS

Selection of the correct range hood for a new kitchen project is crucial to protecting your customers' investment. Here are three basic guidelines to follow when selecting range hoods.

  • Canopy Size/Capture Space - Range hoods should cover MOST, if not all, of the cooking surface. The canopy of the hood should be deep enough to catch most of the heat, steam, smoke and odors rising from the cooking surface. When possible, it is recommended that the hood extend 3" wider thaneach side of the range.
  • Venting Power - Range hoods are rated by CFM (cubic feet/minute) of venting power. Be sure that a hood is selected that matches the BTU output of the cooking surface. For example, commercial gas ranges require higher CFM ratings than a residential four burner stove.
  • Installation Height - The lower (closer to the cooking surface) a hood is installed, the better it works. Always check the manufacturer's LOWEST height recommendation to ensure maximum venting efficiency. Historically, this height has been 27-30" above the vented surface.
Following these simple guidelines will help in your customer's satisfaction with your installation. Using the right equipment helps the job go right!

SQUARE D ANNOUNCES RECALL OF "TRILLIANT" SURGE ARRESTOR

SQUARE D, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a recall of its "TRILLIANT" style secondary surge arrestor - catalog #SDT1175SB. This surge protection device can "degrade" over time which could result in fire. Square D acknowledges five incidents where an arrestor caught fire; two of these resulting in property damage. About 4,200 of these are subject to this recall.
The SDT1175SB, which is installed to protect home electrical wiring systems from lightning and/or power surges, was designed for use ONLY in the "TRILLIANT" series of panelboards (100-200 amp), not the "QO" or "HOMELINE" loadcenters sold by Yaun Co. The Trilliant panels are easily identified due to its plastic makeup - the units (backbox and covers)are made of PVC, not steel as are the QO and HOMELINE models. The SDT1175SB is gray plastic, 2.5" wide by .75" high and a small green indicator light is visible on the side of the arrestor. A label next to the indicator light reads "SURGEBREAKER. Light On (with unit properly installed) - unit is working. Light Off or Flashing - replace unit."
The Trilliant line of panels was installed by many modular home companies so they may be common in our trading territory. If your customer has a surge arrestor that is suspect, they can call 800-666-7557.  Square D will help consumers in arranging for the replacement of these affected items, at no additional cost. Square D offers two other lines of secondary surge arrestors that are not subject to this recall.
