Selkirk Metalbestos Helps Beat The High Price Of Heating Fuels

With everyone anticipating very high heating fuel bills this season we expect a lot  of people will be burning wood.  Whether it's a new wood stove installation or a stove which has not been used for years, the chimney is still a major concern.
For the older chimneys which have no liner or a liner in poor condition, we stock a stainless steel chimney liner.  This product comes in 25 or 35 ft. lengths and is installed usually from the top down, using a rope to pull the liner down.
For new installations, we stock the Platinum series type HT stainless steel all fuel chimney  specifically  designed   for  "Airtight"

stoves.  Metalbestos - type HT chimney is ideal for venting residential heating appliances: burning wood, #2 oil, natural and LP gas.  It is also suitable for wood burning heaters and for combination fuel central heating furnaces.  We stock the HT chimney with the 304 series stainless inner liner.  Appliances burning coal require chimneys with this additional resistance to corrosion to cope with the sulfur and chloride found in many coals.
Just a few reminders of installation requirements that are sometime overlooked.

  • Always keep 2" of air space to combustibles around the pipe insulation must also be kept away from the pipe.
  • Always install an attic insulation shield when passing through an attic.  If the attic is used for storage,  the possibility exists that boxes may fall or be placed against the pipe. It should be boxed in to insure the 2" from combustibles be maintained.
  • Always use an interior resupport when using 15º or 30º  angles to make an offset.  Never exceed the 30º angle by adding more than one angle together. It will not be UL approved when you exceed the 30º.
  • It is not recommended to use an offset outside to get around an overhang. You will not have any place to resupport the pipe and you must notch the eve.
  • Always use a roof brace kit when the pipe sticks out of the roof 5 ft. If the pipe exceeds 10 feet use one roof brace kit for every 5 ft.
  • When going up the side of a building be sure to install wall bands at 8 ft. or closer intervals to stabilize the chimney.
  • The question is always asked: how high must we extend the pipe through the roof? Do we have to go above the roof ridge?  The answers depend, measure 10 ft.horizontal from the roof  to the edge of the chimney. Your chimney cap should be two feet above this mark.  If your pipe is too close to the ridge and you can't measure over 10 ft., then you must extend the pipe two feet above the ridge.  If you have a flat roof  the pipe must stick up a minimum of 3 ft.
Remember always install this product as per manufacturer's instructions.
