AFCI'S AFFECTED BY PROPOSED 2005 NEC CHANGES
Proposed changes in the National Electric Code (NEC) that will be in effect in 2005 will affect the use of Arc Fault Interrupters (AFCI's). Because AFCI's are a relatively new technology and their being part of the Code is fairly recent, new proposals affecting their use are among the most hotly debated articles in the code making process. The proposed section (210.12b) specifically requires the use of "combination type" (as opposed to "branch/feeder type) arc fault interrupters on branch circuits that supply power to receptacles installed in dwelling unit bedrooms. Although this is expected to be included in the 2005 Code, this would NOT be a requirement until January 2008 in order for the industry to adjust to what would be another MAJOR change to the Code. The reason for this waiting period is that the "combination type" AFCI, while in principle offer increased arc fault protection, is a much newer technology and there is concern that it would not be realistic to expect product availability in time to meet the 2005 Code requirements. The three extra years would allow sufficient time for mass production by manufacturers.
