Cryo-tek™ Antifreeze FAQ's

This is the time of year when anti-freeze protection in a heating system is often the topic of discussion. Some of the questions that are frequently asked are listed on the Oatey website: www.oateyscs.com click on Hercules. The following are a few questions and answers I’d like to share with you:

Does Cryo-tek reduce the efficiency of a heating system?

Yes, but to a minor degree for most applications. The specific heat of the solution is lowered significantly with solutions containing greater than 50% propylene glycol.

What would be a good mixture for freeze protection in the New Jersey, New York region?

Use about a 50:50 mix of Cryo-tek -100 and water. This will give a slush point of around 0 F and burst protection to below -50 F.

I used a solution of one part product and four parts water in a radiant heat system. The manufacturer of the heating system suggested the dilution. Why is there a white slime forming in the tubing?

The white slime is bacterial growth. The product has been over diluted to 17.5% glycol. We recommend 30% minimum glycol as a precaution. Dilutions to less than 25% will support and encourage bacterial growth, especially at the warmer operation temperature.
