Bathroom Ventilation Calculations

How much ventilation is needed to properly vent a bathroom? This question is important when selecting bathroom fans to ensure the fan has ample capacity for the job, as ventilating products move different amounts of air.

The following guidelines from HVI (Home Ventilating Institute) can help determine the fan capacity in CFM (cubic feet per minute) necessary for each application:

Bathrooms with intermittent ventilation should follow these rates:

Other recommendations include: Enclosed toilets should have their own exhaust fan Wet area approved fans should be located over the shower/tub when possible

Bathroom doors need at least ¾” clearance to the finished floor to ensure proper entry of makeup air Timers or other controls that maintain ventilation for a minimum of 20 minutes after each bathroom use should be installed For steam room applications, a separate fan is recommended to clear the room of heat/humidity after use For bathrooms with continuous ventilation a fan with a minimum rating of 20 CFM can be used instead of an intermittent 50 CFM unit. Following these guidelines will take the guesswork out of sizing bathroom exhaust fans.
