Samsung Heat Pump Helps Save On Fuel Oil

Burt Robertson, HVAC Marketing Manager

My wife and I decided this summer to do what we could to cut down our oil usage by changing out our old Crane Sunny Day boiler installed in 1963. This boiler had a tank-less coil which really wasted oil to maintain constant temperature and a stack temperature of over 600 degrees. Our house has a roof facing south with no obstructions to block the sun so we decided to install the Eagle Sun drainback solar domestic water heating system. My son and I installed the system in about two weekends. As soon as we put it on line, we were surprised to see that on an average day the storage tank was heated and the pump shut down about 1:00pm. Having installed the 80 gallon storage tank, I came up with the idea not to run the dishwasher in the evening and reduce the amount of stored water. We set the dishwasher timer to run at 11:00 am while the sun is heating the storage tank and this has worked out great. We no longer needed the old boiler during the rest of the summer, so we took it out.

Then phase two started on our project which was to install a new Biasi B10 four section boiler to further lower our fuel oil usage. It is now the beginning of October and the project is almost complete having been working on it a little each weekend.

The mornings are getting colder, this morning I woke up to 56 degrees in the house and the boiler is still not yet piped. Anyone else’s wife would have been upset to say the least to have no heat. No problem, I picked up the remote control to my Samsung 18,000 BTU 17 seer wall mount heat pump/air conditioner and turned the heat pump on and the room temperature was raised in a short time. Our goal is to leave the boiler off until after Thanksgiving and enjoy the savings from the lower cost of heating with the heat pump and continue to use the heat pump as our 1st stage heating and the boiler as backup.

We not only talk about our products but walk the talk.
